An Unrequited Letter to Anne Rice
Posted by Robert P. George on December 17, 2007, 9:29 AM

Dear Ms. Rice:

I am a professor of the philosophy of law at Princeton, and someone who enjoyed your fine book Out of Egypt. I have read your endorsement of Senator Clinton and your reasoning as to why you support her despite your pro-life convictions.

I am a former Democrat who left the party because it hardened its heart toward the child in the womb. In the 1990s, I had the honor of working for Governor Robert P. Casey of Pennsylvania, the last of the great national pro-life Democratic political leaders. (The governor, you may recall, was denied an opportunity to speak at the 1992 Democratic National Convention because of his pro-life advocacy.) I am the grandson of West Virginia coal miners who, together with my grandmothers, were loyal Democrats. If they were alive today, they would ache, as I ache, to know that the political party they loved has committed itself to the legal protection of the killing of the unborn.

Meet the women who won’t have babies – because they’re not eco friendly

Had Toni Vernelli gone ahead with her pregnancy ten years ago, she would know at first hand what it is like to cradle her own baby, to have a pair of innocent eyes gazing up at her with unconditional love, to feel a little hand slipping into hers – and a voice calling her Mummy.

But the very thought makes her shudder with horror.

Because when Toni terminated her pregnancy, she did so in the firm belief she was helping to save the planet.

Valuing Speech

WASHINGTON — Marriage is the foundation of the natural family and sustains family values. That sentence is inflammatory, perhaps even a hate crime.

At least it is in Oakland, Calif. That city’s government says those words italicized here constitute something akin to hate speech, and can be proscribed from the government’s open e-mail system and employee bulletin board.

David Brooks: America’s new pastime: gene shopping
About 40 percent say they’d use genetic engineering to upgrade their offspring
08:26 AM CDT on Saturday, June 16, 2007

At this very moment thousands of people are surfing the Web looking for genetic material so their children will be nothing like me. They are looking through files at sperm bank sites with Jetson-like names such as Xytex, which have become the new eBays for offspring.

USAToday: Court takes harder stance on abortion

Analysis by Joan Biskupic, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court’s abortion ruling Wednesday revealed the new court’s approach to one of the most difficult social issues and was a reminder of its rightward turn since the addition of Bush appointee Samuel Alito.

The 5-4 decision, reinstating a ban on the procedure opponents call “partial-birth abortion,” departed from past rulings by giving legislatures more latitude to restrict abortion, particularly when there is debate among physicians over the safety of a procedure. The decision will make it harder for abortion rights advocates to challenge new restrictions on abortion.

Supreme Court Upholds Partial-Brith Abortion Ban

The Supreme Court upheld the nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure Wednesday, handing abortion opponents the long-awaited victory they expected from a more conservative bench.

The 5-4 ruling said the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law in 2003 does not violate a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion.
