Pursuing God’s Own Heart

Aug 24–25, 2005 - comment

Today on the broadcast our special guest is Dr. Jerry Vines. He is pastor of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida. He is also a two term past President of the Southern Baptist Convention. He has written a book about the life of David, King of Israel. It is titled Pursuing God’s Own Heart.

Looking at the life of David can be a little like looking into a mirror. David was a complex man. He loved God-but, like a lot of us, he made mistakes-big ones. He had a heart to do God’s will-but, also like a lot of us, he blew it-badly. Looking at all of the facets of his life can help us better understand ourselves. Studying David’s life can encourage us to love God the way he did-and, if we are wise, it can also enable us to avoid the snares, temptations and mistakes that caused David to stumble. Today’s guest, Dr. Jerry Vines has taken the microscope to David’s life for our benefit.

David was a warrior, a leader, and a shepherd for Israel. He was not a perfect man. As we’ve seen, he made some big mistakes in his life. But the bottom line is that he was a man after God’s own heart. Can God say that about you? About me? At the end of our days-with all of our failures and mistakes-there will be no higher praise than to hear God say of each of us, “This was a man or woman after God’s own heart.”

Thank you for visiting FaithandFamily.com, a broadcast ministry of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Comments are moderated to preserve the family-oriented nature of this website and in an attempt to avoid comment spam. We welcome opposing viewpoints, and we will not turn comments away as long as your views are presented with respect to everyone.

Please follow the these guidelines to insure your comments will be posted:

  1. Use a real name, at least a real first name. We find folks are less-rude online when not hiding behind a screen-name.
  2. Name-calling and vulgar-language will not be tolerated. Zero-tolerance is our policy. We will not spend time editing profanity. If it contains foul language, your post will be deleted. Oh, and we decide what is and what is not vulgar.
  3. Comments must be on topic. Correspondence or general comments (compliments, complaints, and otherwise) are best delivered here or expressed on your own personal Web site.
  4. And please, do not post in ALL CAPS. It looks like you're screaming. :-)

Comments will not appear immediately and are subject to editing or deletion. We will make every attempt to check new comments in a timely manner, though there will likely be delays on the weekends and around holidays. If you wish to keep your comments for your records, please save them on your own computer as comments are not guaranteed to be left up indefinitely.

Other than that, we welcome you and hope to see thoughtful discussions about For Faith & Family broadcasts.
