It’s Better to Build Boys Than Mend Men

May 19–20, 2008 - comment

Chances are we all know a young person. They may be in our family, our church, or our neighborhood. And today our guest is going to challenge each of us to reach out to those young people that God brings across our paths.

Many children are growing up in this country without Parents, without strong positive role models in their lives. Some parents are absent, or get too busy or some just don’t care, which makes it harder for kids to grow up, harder for them to develop into responsible, well-adjusted adults.

Our guest on the broadcast today is S. Truett Cathy, founder and chairman of Chick-fil-A, Inc., and founder of the WinShape Centre Foundation, an organization which supports 13 foster homes and a scholarship program which helps young people. He has taught a Sunday School Class for 13 year old boys for over 50 years. He is here with us today to talk about his book, It’s Better to Build Boys than to Mend Men.

Truett says, “God wants to work through you to change the life of a child. He will provide the love, the encouragement, the joy and the hope. All you have to contribute are arms for hugs, a voice to encourage or to discipline, and time for companionship… Every child God touches through you will be changed, even if you don’t see the transformation with your own eyes. And you will be changed by every child God touches through you.” (pp 9 – 10)

Thank you for visiting FaithandFamily.com, a broadcast ministry of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Comments are moderated to preserve the family-oriented nature of this website and in an attempt to avoid comment spam. We welcome opposing viewpoints, and we will not turn comments away as long as your views are presented with respect to everyone.

Please follow the these guidelines to insure your comments will be posted:

  1. Use a real name, at least a real first name. We find folks are less-rude online when not hiding behind a screen-name.
  2. Name-calling and vulgar-language will not be tolerated. Zero-tolerance is our policy. We will not spend time editing profanity. If it contains foul language, your post will be deleted. Oh, and we decide what is and what is not vulgar.
  3. Comments must be on topic. Correspondence or general comments (compliments, complaints, and otherwise) are best delivered here or expressed on your own personal Web site.
  4. And please, do not post in ALL CAPS. It looks like you're screaming. :-)

Comments will not appear immediately and are subject to editing or deletion. We will make every attempt to check new comments in a timely manner, though there will likely be delays on the weekends and around holidays. If you wish to keep your comments for your records, please save them on your own computer as comments are not guaranteed to be left up indefinitely.

Other than that, we welcome you and hope to see thoughtful discussions about For Faith & Family broadcasts.
