Heroes Among Us
Nov 23–24, 2006
Today, more than ever, America needs heroes – people whose lives are great examples… We need more heroes that remind us how we are suppose to act. Today we are going to hear about some of history’s everyday people who became heroes in their time. Our guest is Congressman Jim Ryun, Representative of the 2nd Congressional District of Kansas. He is a former Olympic athlete, who participated in the 1964, 1968 and l972 Olympic games. He won a silver medal in the 1968 games. He held the world record in the 1500-meter, the 880-yard and the mile. He and his sons have written a new book titled Heroes Among Us, which tells the stories of several heroes from the past.
It’s a sad reality that too often in this country we’ve elevated the wrong people. Actors, entertainers, and sports figures have become our heroes-regardless of their conduct in their personal lives or the content of their character. That’s why the message that Congressman Jim Ryun brings us today is so compelling. Congressman Ryun is a former Olympian and world record holder. America considers him among her heroes. But he joins us today by phone to exhort us to rethink our criteria for choosing our heroes.
America needs to hear about these heroes. We need to be reminded of the men and women who have paid the price for our freedoms, who have stood alone against injustice. Our children need to hear that it was not the most beautiful or the most famous or the most talented-but the most faithful who made the right choices when it wasn’t popular, politically correct, or even safe to do so. Their lives inspire us to believe that we too can be heroic if God should call us to right a wrong, take a risk, or fight a foe. Oh, that we all will be equal to the challenges each of us will face!
