Harry Potter and the Bible

“Harry Potter Mania” has swept across America and much of the world. But is this fascination with the boy wizard from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry simple fun or a dangerous influence on our children?

Today on the broadcast our special guest is Richard Abanes, a religious journalist who specializes in cults and the occult. He has written a book titled Harry Potter and the Bible: the Menace Behind the Magick in which he addresses the controversy surrounding this popular series of books.

Like the hula hoop of generations past and the beanie toys of recent remembrance, the Harry Potter craze has swept across this nation. Nothing seems to have captured the attention of young people quite like it. Upon closer scrutiny, we discover the hero – Harry Potter himself – is a student in a school of witchcraft and wizardry. That fact alone has sent red flags up for some Christian parents and educators, while others applaud the series as harmless fun that has at least got kids reading again.

The bottom line here is that anything to which our children are exposed or by which they are influenced must come under our scrutiny as parents. Because we live in a post-Christian culture, we can’t just assume that books written for children are suitable for them to be reading. This should be a wake- up call for all of us to be careful to read what our kids are reading and to talk with them about it. This same lesson applies to what they are watching on television or listening to on the radio. We are raising the next generation who will take the message of Christ to this country and to the world. The enemy is aware of this and will use anything to undermine and defeat them. It’s our job as parents, with God’s help, to keep that from happening. With diligence and vigilance, we can say with confidence, “Greater is He that is in us, than He that is in the world!”

Now,i know i’ll probably get hate mail for this but i’ve read the harry potter books and find them a great way to waste time and look forward to the upcoming 7th book. I even read them to my younger brother.I also know not every one likes harry potter books because many of my friends don’t ,and my mom doesn’t care if i read them or not. Her parents think that they are bad and my fathers parents don’t care because it helps me learn to write and learn about other cultures.
