Center of the Storm

Today on the broadcast our special guest is Congresswoman Katherine Harris. Most of us would recognize her as Katherine Harris, Secretary of State for the State of Florida, who rose to near celebrity status during the presidential election of 2000. She is also the author of a book which chronicles her responses, her actions and the lessons she learned through her harrowing experiences during the aftermath of the election of 2000. Her book is titled The Center of the Storm: Practicing Principled Leadership in Times of Crisis.
Out of the chaos and confusion of Election Night 2000 a name and a face rose out of near anonymity and was splashed across our television screens and the headlines of our morning papers. And, like only the media can do it, the face and the name were vilified, distorted and defamed.
Katherine Harris knows better than most of us that the storms of life can come unexpectedly and blow long and hard. Like the hurricanes that periodically threaten her native Florida, the aftermath of the election swept into her life and demanded every ounce of courage and integrity that she possessed. She endured deliberate misrepresentations, personal attacks, name calling and even death threats. She emerged from the storm battered, but standing tall because she knew she had done her job and followed the law. She also emerged from the storm a wiser woman. And it is this wisdom gained through surviving the storm that she has shared with us in her book, appropriately titled The Center of the Storm: Practicing Principled Leadership in Times of Crisis.

Ms. Harris, thank you. I have senators, congressmen, a judge, JAG, law firms, corporations, and Christians coming against me. I’ve lost my home and company. I would be a wealthy woman if I accepted bribes but because I chose integrity, I was shut out of DoD contracts. They threatened others that if they associated with me, they would lose their contracts. I was dropped like I was plague, and couldn’t get work for 4 years. Only one person stood by my side and he lost his contract.
You said if you didn’t write down what happened, you were afraid you would start believing the lies. I understand. If I wouldn’t have kept a detailed journal, I too would believe their lies. I thought God would do something before I lost everything, but He didn’t.
I hope I have courage like you not to quit. I’d like to see the other side of my storm.
