Bringing Up Boys

Today on For Faith & Family our special guest is Dr. James Dobson, licensed clinical psychologist, Founder of Focus on the Family, and a friend of this broadcast. He has penned a book called Bringing Up Boys.
You know, James Dobson tells us at the beginning of this book that it was the Greek philosopher, Plato, who once said,“Of all the animals, the boy is the most unmanageable.” Anyone who has ever parented a son knows exactly what Plato was talking about. One devoted, but frazzled mother of three lively sons humorously defined the word “boy” as “a noise with dirt on it.” Our boys defy us and delight us, they exhaust us and exhilarate us, they challenge us and charm us. And we love them! Over the years the task of raising sons has become a greater and greater challenge as our society has changed from a Christian to a post-Christian culture. Never before has the responsibility of raising godly sons to become godly men become so difficult or so important. That’s why today’s guest sheds such a bright light on this path of parenting. In his book Bringing Up Boys, Dr. James Dobson addresses this issue with eloquence, honesty and humor.
Parents, I hope this broadcast will make the urgency of our mission clear. There is no higher calling on earth than parenting. The boys we are raising today will be the leaders, the role models, and the fathers of tomorrow. We must help build them into strong men of God who will be equal to the tasks that their future holds. This is serious business. We must not fail them.

Dear Dr. Land:
I enjoy listening to your program on my way to work very much. I especially liked Dr. Dobson speaking on boys because I now have 2 Grandsons. My daughter went her computer and listened also. How can I receive a copy of the article he read by Peggy Noonan. It was wonderful
Thank you so much

I love Dr. Dobson and respect his ideas a great deal, but I was dismayed with his general statements regarding the black fathers during his interview aired 4/30/07. I do not disagree with any of the horrible statistics he quoted. However, his last statements generally lumped the married black fathers as divorced, imprisoned, abusive, not caring or just not available. Whereas the white married fathers were overworked and therefore not available to their families. It may seem nitpicky on my part, but it left me feeling the entire story wasn’t represented. This is something that is a usual occurance when it comes to our black men.

Wonderful program with Dr. Dobson, Brother Land. I was not privileged to have sons, but I am definitely encouraging others to listen to the programs for March 30 and May 1 on “Bringing Up Boys.” Excellent!
