It must be incredibly frustrating to know that, each and every day, there are Americans out there exercising their right to the pursuit of happiness in ways that you are unable to control.

The paternalistic view that we, the people, need to have our lives dictated by a cadre of theological puritans undermines the very essence of freedom.

“Too many churches, too little truth inside..”
The Guess Who.

Actually, Eric, the author is simply stating fact, and is nowhere attempting to “dictate” how you should live your life.

You can either agree or disagree with the facts presented, but it doesn’t change anything. Gambling destroys everything it touches.

C’mon, JR; it’s a flutter at the roulette wheel, not the bubonic plague!!! A touch of hysteria, perhaps?

Have you ever been inside a casino? Have you ever spent an hour or two with any of the thousands of workers in the gambling industry? Like the Pope’s stand on birth control, “If you don’t play the game, you shouldn’t presume to make the rules for it.”

Certainly the author is attempting to dictate to others. Prohibition dictates that one cannot partake of the activity. If you consider gambling evil, don’t gamble. If you consider drinking alcohol to be evil, don’t go into bars. Your choice should not preclude others from exercising theirs.

Have you seen the abject poverty one block away from the Strip in Las Vegas? Have you seen the projects directly behind Atlantic City? I have. I’ve seen mothers in the casino at Treasure Island, at 11pm, with their infant child in the stroller next to them. I’ve seen them feed dollar after dollar into video slots. It’s depressing. Gambling breeds poverty and crime, it’s a fact.

Again, the author is not suggesting precluding others. He is stating facts. That you do not agree with those facts is irrelevant and will not make them any less true.
