Excellent article on the history of Memorial Day. I just wish more people paid attention to the significance of this day and reflected on the sacrifices made by so many and are still being made to preserve, protect, and defend our nation. God bless you, Dr. Land, in the great work you are doing for the kingdom of God.

Dr Land, I read once where Gen Eisenhower surveyed the blood-tinged waters of Normandy’s beaches and the bodies strewn there. He turned to an aide and asked “Where do we find such men?”
They were men willing to step forward and sacrifice all their tomorrows so that we might enjoy today.
To quote an old Roman proverb: Truly only the dead have seen the end of war.

A very well written and thoughtful article on the meaning and origins of Memorial Day.

As a vice commander of my local American Legion post it pains me to see the dwindling attendance at Memorial Day services. Even during the wave of patriotic fervor that swept the nation after the attacks of 9/11 the younger generations just don’t seem to “get it” when it comes to patriotic observances, which is a shame because the burden of continuing this great country of ours will fall on their shoulders.

It would seem to me that younger folks these days know more about who the winners of American Idol are and who the “in” pop stars are and less and less and less about what transpired and what needs to transpire so they can enjoy the freedoms they have.
