Urge Senate to Support House-Passed ‘Cut, Cap, and Balance’ Bill

By Richard Land - Jul 21, 2011 - 4 -

Dear Friends:

The Senate is expected to vote on Saturday, July 23 on the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act (H.R. 2560). This crucial bill offers a real solution to our nation’s serious economic problems. As you recall from our article in this week’s Faith & Family Values e-newsletter, H.R. 2560:

  • Cuts spending by $111 billion in the next fiscal year;
  • Caps spending as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over the next decade; and
  • Requires congressional passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment before the debt limit can be raised.

This bill passed the House by a vote of 234-190, with five Democrats voting for it. Yet, unless the Senate hears from thousands of Americans in the next 48 hours, the bill will die in the Senate. One Democrat senator has already declared H.R. 2560 “cruel, stupid, and dangerous.” I fail to see how rescuing our country from runaway spending and economic disaster is anything but sane.

Your voice is needed now. If you agree that our government must cut its spending now, limit its future spending to a reasonable percentage of our nation’s annual economic output, and assure this fiscal sanity for future generations through a constitutional amendment that limits spending, then your senators need to hear from you.

You can reach your senators by calling the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or by e-mailing them here.

Friends, our nation stands at the brink of economic meltdown. I hope you will join me in calling on the Senate to pass H.R. 2560. I ask you to please also consider sharing this e-mail with all your family and friends. We have this moment. Let us not lose it.

In His Service,

Dr. Richard Land
President

I think this bill is a disgrace! You are cutting the poorest people’s only income, balance the budget by stopping 11 billion going to Afganistan and all these other wars and stop wasting our money on worthless pork! We are paying these represenitives to stand up for the american people, not steal our money from social security!

This is embarrassing. As an Ethics student at an SBC seminary with ambitions for a future in politics, my resume is indelibly marked—both positively and negatively—by the positions that the SBC takes. Cut, Cap, and Balance was never a tenable solution to any of our nation’s financial problems. In fact, it was a colossal waste of time. It was nothing more than a practice in political posturing by a fumbling right-wing group in the House. If Dr. Land is serious about “rescuing our country from run away spending and economic disaster”, he would try to moderate his untenable right-wing position and support a more realistic plan. The time for political posturing is done. Therefore, I urge Dr. Land and the ERLC to reconsider supporting Cut, Cap, and Balance or anything resembling it.

The SBC and Mr. Land need to stay out of politics. The decline of the SBC is partially a result of so-called Christian leaders focusing on politics and not on the gospel.

As a Southern Baptist for over 50 years I find myself being driven away by Dr. Land and SBC pastors who echo his hypocrisy. Dr. Land and many Repubs are currently decrying government spending (I agree) but where was his criticism of government spending when Bush created the largest increase in the national debt ($6T+) in history or when Reagan created the highest percentage increase (186%) in the national debt in history?

Recently Dr. Land bashed Obama for going on vacation & spending the most $ using AF1. Easy research reveals that Bush & Reagan had taken approx 3 times as much “vacation” by this point in their terms as has Obama and used AF1 at least 3 times as much.

Summary - Dr. Land brazenly supports a political party which is against the laws governing non-profits and makes false statements in doing so which is against God’s laws. Maybe Dr. Land should spend a little more time reading the Bible and less time stumping for Repubs.

Goodbye SBC.
