A Call for Broadcast Decency
- Apr 24, 2006 - 1 -
Dear Friends:
I believe you are as disgusted with the level of profanity and indecency on television and radio as I am. Even the so-called family hour is hard to sit through. Anyone with children in their home must be constantly on guard to prevent their children from being exposed to offensive images and words. The incidences and severity of this material seem to increase daily.
Finally, we are on the verge of being able to curb some of the worst of this material through the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2005 (S. 193/H.R. 310). This bill will update the Communications Act of 1934 to introduce penalties for decency violations that broadcasters will have to take seriously. Right now, the broadcasters seem to feel that the penalties are too trivial to worry about.
This bill passed the House by a vote of 389 to 38 on February 16, 2005. That’s right, the House passed this bill over a year ago! It has been sitting in a Senate committee ever since. The Senate stopped a similar bill from passing in 2004. They appear determined to kill it again.
If you want to empower the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to issue tough penalties on broadcasters who violate basic standards of decency, I urge you to call or email Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), the Chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and tell him you want him to release the bill for a Senate vote immediately.
You can reach Senator Stevens at (202) 224-3004, or you can send him an email by clicking here. I hope you will join me in helping clean up the public airwaves in our country.

Dear Senator Stevens:
I am hoping that this bill passes soon. It has reached the point that watching television is almost unbearable. I am offended my many of the programs on air and I believe the public is becoming insensitized to violence, foul langauge and indecency in general. I hope tougher penalties are given to broadcasters who air such things. Please release this bill for Senate vote immedaitely! As a voter, I would like my voice heard on this.
